Late Shri Puranchandra Guptaji, the Founder of Dainik Jagran was born
on 2nd January 1912 in Kalpi village of Bundelkhand, Uttar Pradesh. He
completed formal education from Gurunarayan Khatri College, Kanpur
affiliated to Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. Being in the post
Independence period he was actively involved in Indian freedom struggle. In
1937 he started a printing press "Yugantar" in Kanpur. In the year 1939 he
published a Hindi Weekly "Swatantra". Hindi newspaper daily "Jagran" was
published on 7th March 1942 from Jhansi. On 21st September 1947 "Dainik
Jagran" Kanpur edition was first published. Since then he never looked back.
He was nominated as a member of many distinguished newspaper societies.
For twenty years from 1960 he was executive committee member of IENS
(Now known as INS) New Delhi. In 1974 he was the Chairman of Audit Bureau
of circulations, Mumbai. For two consecutive years from 1975 – 77 he was the
President of Press Trust of India. In the year 1978- 79 he was the President of
INS, New Delhi. During his lifetime he was invited and also toured European
countries and the erstwhile Russia. He breathed his last on 16th September
1986.
Today, Jagran Education Foundation (JEF) is a well known name in the
field of Education with several schools and colleges. Jagran Public School,
Varanasi is the latest addition with its first academic session in 2015-
2016.The distinguished achievements of Late Shri Puranchandra Guptaji
enlightens many lives long after he is gone and will continue to do so. Dainik
Jagran is the largest circulated newspaper daily in the world today.
